Paveway - Paveway II

The PAVEWAY II (UK) is a COMBAT PROVEN laser guided ballistic weapon system utilising the well known and proven 1000 lb HE MC bomb as the warhead. The weapon can be delivered by various aircraft using conventional twin suspension bale lugs at 355.6 mm centres.


The weapon comprises a standard high explosive 1000 lb (453.5 kg) bomb fitted with a Multi-Function Bomb Fuze, a Computer Control Group (CCG) with guidance fins and a No 120 Tail Unit fitted with retractable fins.

The tail unit, modified by PA to accommodate the Multi-Function Bomb Fuze, provides stowage for arming components, ballast, fuze arming and aerodynamic lift from the rear wings when they are deployed. The aft adaptor ensures a smooth airflow from the bomb the rear of the tail unit, which terminates at the multi-bladed arming vane. The tail unit consists of three sub-assemblies. A US tail assembly and a UK manufactured aft adaptor permanently joined together house a UK manufactured mechanism to air arm the No 947 or No 960 (MFBF) fuze. The UK elements are designed and manufactured by PA.

The main wing assembly houses the wing operating spider, dampers, 4 springs, wing latch and four wings. The rear wing assembly spider and linkage assembly allows the wings to be retracted into the fairing while a set of 4 coil springs are compressed and held by the wing release latch. Tripping the latch releases the spider, the springs push the spider and linkage assembly thereby moving the wings to the extended and flight position. The wing release latch and arming mechanism are activated by shearwires when the weapon is released from the aircraft.

The Guidance and Control Unit mounts on the nose of the warhead by means of a Forward Adaptor Assembly and provides auto-pilot control, target detection and weapon guidance functions. At target acquisition the weapon locks-on to a laser illuminated target and the Computer Control Group alters the flight path of the weapon for impact on target. The fuzes that may be fitted are the standard Fuze No 947 or No 960 (MFBF), both in UK Armed Forces service.
