Practice Bombs - 14kg
The 14kg Practice Bomb has been in service with the UK Royal Air Force and the Royal
Saudi Air Force for over 15 years. During that period PA have supplied in excess
of 1 million practice bombs to the Ministry of Defence.
The practice bomb consists of four main components; a steel body and striker shaft,
a cartridge and cartridge container, a tail unit and a frangible nose cap. The 14kg
practice bomb is dimensionally similar to the F4 and also has a similar mass. It
contains its own cartridge to produce a smoke and flash signal on impact. The practice
bomb is capable of operating against targets ranging from soft (water) to hard (concrete).
The resulting smoke and flash signal escape from the open end of the tail unit.
The signal is of such intensity that it can be visually observed under day or night
conditions from a distance of up to 3000 metres. The practice bomb has been designed
with a number of safety features and safety during flight, carriage and immediately
after release will not be degraded should the practice bomb be fired inadvertently,
as no solid debris that could damage the aircraft will be ejected.
The simplicity of the design and its operation provide for a very high degree of
reliability, proven by many years of in service experience and is in excess of 97%
for the Factory to Target sequence.
